RESPONSE SHEET TO: Annette Vietti-Cook, Secretary FROM : Commissioner Burns

SUBJECT:

COMSECY-17-0040 : Request for Revision to Commission Tasking on Annual Assessment of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Enforcement Program Approved X Disapproved Abstain Not Participating COMM ENTS: Below X Attached None I reluctantly approve the NRC staffs requested schedule adjustment for WITS 199500083, i. e ..

to revise the due date for publication of the annual report from March 31 to May 31 of each year.

Although I understand the challenge of incorporating data into an annual report that may not be fully verifiable until two months after the end of the reporting period , much of the data is otherwise reported , fixed, and understood at the conclusion of the reporting period. My concern is that under the revised deadline the report will lag five months after the end of the calendar year. Although I am approving the requested extension at this time, I challenge the staff to make best efforts to beat the deadline. The staff might also assess the usefulness of the scope of reporting as well as potential efficiencies in the report's development.
