PO Box 620 Fulton, MO 65251 May 13, 2002 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn: Document Control Desk Mail Station PI-137 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 Gentlemen:

ULNRC-04659 DOCKET NUMBER 50-483 CALLAWAY PLANT UNION ELECTRIC COMPANY CHANGES TO THE NRC APPROVED FIRE PROTECTION PROGRAM

  • rences:
1) ULNRC-04522, dated September 5, 2001
2) ULNRC-04582, dated December 13, 2001
3) NRC Inspection Report 50-483/00-13, dated October 30, 2000
4) ULNRC-4347, dated November 30, 2000
5) NRC letter, dated March 6, 2001 Reference 1 transmitted an application for a license amendment pursuant to 10CFR50.90 to Facility Operating License No. NPF-30 for the Callaway Plant. This proposed license amendment requested approval of the Commission, pursuant to Operating License Condition 2.C(5)(d), to make changes to the approved fire protection program as described in the Final Safety Analysis Report. This was in response to an inspection finding (References 3-5) which was characterized as having very low safety significance (Green) utilizing the Significance Determination Process.

AmerenUE has decided to withdraw the application for a licensed amendment for economic reasons and pursue a plant modification. We will track this action to closure using our corrective action program.
