SUBJECT:

Non-Routine Report on Clinton Lake Fish Loss In accordance with the Clinton Power Station (CPS) Environmental Protection Plan (Non-Radiological), Sections 4.1, Unusual or Important Environmental Events, and 5.4, Plant Reporting Requirements, Exelon Generation Company (EGC), LLC, is submitting this non-routine report of a fish loss that occurred on Clinton Lake.

On January 10, 2014, the Illinois Department of Natueal Resources (IDNR) notified EGC Environmental personnel that there had been a reported fish loss on Clinton Lake. IDNR personnel confirmed the loss by observation near the Illinois Route 48 bridge. On January 14, 2014, CPS Environmental staff and IDNR personnel performed an extensive inspection by boat of the shoreline of the lake. There were several species observed that had washed onto the shoreline. The majority of the fish were carp and buffalo. There were also a small number of sport fish. EGC Environmental personnel also notified the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, which requested no further action or information. The number of fish lost is small and does not have a significant impact on the overall fish population in Clinton Lake.

On December 8 and 13, 2013, CPS experienced unplanned plant shutdowns. Following both shutdowns, Clinton personnel performed walkdowns of the lake for any unusual occurrences. No issues were identified until the IDNR contacted EGC on January 10. The causes for these two shutdowns are being evaluated in the corrective action process. These shutdowns can cause a thermal gradient in the lake that could have an impact on a

Plant shutdowns are normally scheduled in the spring or fall which minimize the potential for thermal gradients. No cleanup has been determined to be necessary as natural processes have begun to decompose the fish.
