Technical Specifications

Technical Specifications (TS or Tech Specs or sometimes Improved Tech Specs) are typically contained in Appendix A of the facility operating license. It is written to provide a "what if" cause and effect chain for certain changes to the plant status. For example: If two ECCS are in-op then the plant must proceed to shut down immediately.

Standard Technical Specifications

The Standard Technical Specifications (STS) refers to the NRC approved template which nuclear plants can adopt based on plant design. A custom Tech Spec means that a plant hasn't adopted a standard tech spec. The term Improved Technical Specifications is a synonym for STS when its adopted to a site's use.
