SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK' STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 CLASS 1E CABLE ARRANGEMENT SDAR: CP-87-101 (INTERIM REPORT)

Gentlemen:

On September. 10, 1987, we verbally notified your Mr. H. S. Phillips of a deficiency involving Class 1E electrical circuits with multiple conductor per phase feeders.which may have the potential to overheat. This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).

Specifically,'while preparing Revision 3 of Electrical Specification 2323-ES-100,' " Electrical Erection Specification," a possible deficiency was noted in the arrangement of multiple conductor per phase feeders in cable trays. The current in multiple conductor per phase feeders is affected by the cable arrangement in the cable trays.

If the conductor current is not divided equally, cable overload and subsequent ~ overheating may result.

We are' continuing our evaluation of the impact of this issue upon the safety of' plant operations.

Our next report on-this issue will be submitted no later than December 11, 1987.

Very truly yours, W. G. Counsil WJH:tgj c-Mr. R. D. Martin, Region IV Resident Inspectors, CPSES (3) j B710140321 871009 PDR ADOCK 05000445 5
