INACCURATE METHODS OF WELD MEASUREMENTS  !

SDAR: CP-87-74 (FINAL REPORT) j Gentlemen: i On August 24, 1987, we verbally notified your Mr. H. S. Phillips of a deficiency involving inadequate measurement of wei:1 size (throat area) in joints of structural tube steel. The initial' written report was due on September 23, 1987. On September 23, 1987, we verbally requested and received an extension from your Mr. R. F. Warnick until October 2,1987. These weld conditions are addressed in Corrective Action Request CAR-087. This is the i final report of a potentially reportable item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).

Specifically, the effective throat for welds in the joints of structural tube ,

steel was not properly defined in the design requirements, resulting in '

construction and inspection procedures which overestimated the effective weld ,

throat area, in order to evaluate these conditions, we have initiated a drawing review of tubular structural steel installat'.ons segregated by technical discipline.

Although a number of welds with the potential for insufficient effective throats have been identified, all welds for which the analysis has been completed meet the design requirements.

Our evaluation of this issue is being implemented and documented in accordance with Specific Technical Issue Report STIR-SWEC-S-015. Please note that similar deficiencies involving welding have been identified by SDAR CP-87-72, "lMPROPERLY DEFINED WELD LENGTHS," as potentially reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). As the deficiencies noted in this report and SDAR CP-87-72 are being evaluated in the same Specific Technical Jssue Report STIR-SWEC-S-015, all future reports regarding these deficiencies will be submitted per SDAR CP-87-72.
