CP-87-52 (INTERIM REPORT) l Gentlemen:
On July 29, 1987, we verbally notified your Mr. H. S. Phillips of a deficiency involving an apparent inadequacy in vendor information used as design input which could result in unsatisfactory Class 1E battery capabilities..This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).
Specifically, during electrical design validation, review of a calculation issued to justify feeding DC emergency lighting from Class 1E power sources indicated that vendor information on battery capability did not consider 1
temperature correction and aging for the batteries.
We are continuing our evaluation of the impact of this issue upon the safety i
of plant operations.
We anticipate submitting our next report by October 30, 1987.
Very truly yours, u).6d W. G. Counsil 8709010321 870828 PDR ADOCK 05000445 S
