DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 COMMODITY INSTALLATIONS AT SECONDARY WALL DESIGN GAPS SDAR: CP-86-12 (INTERIM REPORT)
Gentlemen:
On February 27, 1986, we verbally notified your Mr. T. F. Westerman of a deficiency involving attachments at, or in close proximity to, design gaps between secondary walls and adjacent walls / floors. This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provision of 10CFR50.55(e). Our last interim report logged was TXX-6362, dated March 27, 1987.
The methodology for evaluation of commodities attached to secondary and adjacent structures or walls has been developed and incorporated in Design Bases Document (DBD CS-19) " Building and Secondary Wall Displacements".
Evaluation of the commodities bridging gaps between secondary walls and adjacent structures is now scheduled to be completed by the end of June,1987, for Unit I and common areas. Commodities that are deemed unacceptable by evaluation will be reworked as required. Unit 2 will be scheduled after completion of Unit 1.
A Commodity Clearance Program is being developed for all seismically supported commodities and will include those installed in close proximity to secondary walls. Verification Method CPE-FVM-CS-068 " Commodity Clearance" has been drafted and is in interdisciplinary review.
In addition, Specification CPE-S-1021 is being prepared to insure that no future installations violate specific clearance criteria. The evaluation of commodity clearances is expected to be completed by November, 1987.
l The methodology for determining the structural adequacy of secondary wall designs which did not previously consider support loadings has been established and Field Verification Method (FVM CS-058) was issued on May 8, 1987. The evaluation of secondary walls, considering commodity support loading, is scheduled for completion by July 30, 1987.

June 3, 1987 Page 2 of 2 Following a full analysis of these issues, an evaluation will be made regarding the effects on the safety of plant operations had these conditions gone uncorrected.
We will submit our next report by December 18, 1987.
Very truly yours, utkk W. G. Counsil
