DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 PR0XIMITY PLACEMENT - RICHMOND INSERTS TO EMBEDDED PLATES AND WELDED ATTACHMENTS TO EMBEDDED PLATES SDAR: CP-86-04 (INTERIM REPORT)

Gentlemen:

On February 13, 1987, we notified you by our letter logged TXX-6260, of a deficiency involving the placement of Richmond inserts in the proximity of loaded embedded plates which coula compromise the integrity of adjacent shear cones. This is an interim report of a deficiency which is reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). By our telephone request of April 29, 1987, received'by your Mr. Cliff Hale, the due date for this report was extended until May 13, 1987.

Our corrective actions previously specified for Unit 1 are continuing as planned. Based on the current 3roject schedule, it is anticipated.that the Unit I corrective actions will 3e completed by December 31, 1987. New work for Unit 2 is being done in accordance with the revised design specification and the related construction / quality control procedures. The Unit 2 field verification of existing installations will be conducted following the completion of the Unit I verification.

We anticipate submitting our next report no later than August 1, 1987.
