SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 CABLE TRAY SPLICES / CONNECTIONS SDAR: CP-86-52 (INTERIM REPORT)

Dear Mr. Johnson:

On July 25, 1986, we verbally notified you Mr. I. Barnes of a deficiency involving the splices / connections used for cable trays in Units 1 and 2. This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). Our latest interim report logged TXX-6053 was submitted October 21, 1986.

The process of gathering information on Unit 2 installations was initiated in September, 1986, by expanding the verification procedure to include tray splice connections. Presently, additional details of deviations in Unit 2 from approved splice patterns are being assessed to determine if Unit I data should also be incorporated. Upon completion of this assessment, a sample will be developed and included in the testing program. This program will provide identification of the locations and types of all accessible splice plates.

Our testing program has been expanded to include splice plates that deviate from generic types approved for use on CPSES. We have revised our estimated completion date for evaluation of all test results to March 31, 1987.

Our next report will be submitted no later than April 28, 1987.

Very truly your::,
