SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES) ,,

DOCKET NO. 50-445 TRAIN C CONDUIT SUPPORTS SDAR: CP-85-36 (INTERIM REPORT)

Dear Mr. Johnson:

On September 6,1986, we verbally notified your Mr. C. Gould of a deficiency involving the installation of non-safety related conduit (two-inch diameter and smaller) on non-safety related dead weight supports in Category 1 areas.

This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). Our most recent interim report was logged TXX-4974, dated August 22, 1986. We received an extension until October 3, 1986, from your Mr. T. Westerman for submitting this report.

This issue is being evaluated by Impell under CPRT Program Plan ISAP I.c.

Field verifications are currently in progress to verify the adequacy of these Train C conduit supports. Impell Corporation has developed a multilevel screening process which is being implemented to qualify all supports for seismic loads or to verify that adverse interactions with safety-related features do not occur. For supports that cannot be verified as acceptable for seismic loads, one of several rework options may be employed. These rework options are to modify the support, reroute the conduit, or provide seismic restraints.

This program is currently underway for Unit 1 and Common Area. Approximately 35,000 conduit supports have been deemed acceptable for seismic loading, representing approximately cne-half of the supports in Unit I and Conaan Area.

To date, the evaluation of 40 rooms has been completed and no safety hazards have been identified. This represents approximately 15 percent of the rooms in Unit 1 and Common.

This evaluation is currently scheduled for completion during the second quarter of 1987. We anticipate submitting our next report on this issue no later than January 21, 1987.

Very truly yours, bh$$b00l4g 53 JCH/amb
