SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 UNISTRUT SPRING NUTS ON INSTRUMENT SUPPORTS SDAR: 'CP-86-50 (INTERIll REPORT)

Dear Mr. Johnson:

On July 16, 1986, we verbally notified your Mr. I. Barnes of a deficiency involving nut alignment and torque requirements for unistrut spring nuts on instrument mounts. This is an interim report of a pctentially reportable item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). On August 15, 1986, we requested and received an extension until August 18, 1984, in submitting this report from your Mr. D. Hunnicutt.

A evaluation of all Unit I safety related instruments presently installed is planned.

This review will include damage and deficiency ic'entification, torquing and alignment of spring nuts, and inspection / verification by QC.

Prior to the initiation of this rework, the applicable construction procedures, and QC inspection procedures, specification, will be revised to incorporate the vendor's torquing requirements and establish inspection attributes. Upon revision of these documents, individual operational travelers for each safety related instrument will be generated to control the evaluation i

f We are continuing our evaluation of this issue. We anticipate submitting our next report no later than October 10, 1986.

i Very truly yours, Yu1A W. G. Counsil By:
