Dear Mr. Hunter:

In accordance with 10CFR50.55(e), we are submitting the enclosed written report of actions taken to correct a deficiency regarding inadequate con- I sideration of non-seismic to seismic interaction effects in the design of architectural features.

Supporting documentation is available at the CPSES site for your Inspector's review.

Very truly yours,

TXX-4552 9/12/85 Page 2 ATTACHMENT DESIGN OF ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES Description During a review performed in support of the NRC Technical Review Team (TRT) effort, the effects of non-seismic to seisnic interactions were observed to be inadequately considered in the design of architectural features.

Subsequent engineering evaluations indicate the integrity of the mounting of these installations could not be assured during a seismic event.

Architectural features include such items as metal floor plates, handrails, grating, masonry and drywall installations, and doors. The function of these items is related to personnel access and other non-operating activities.

Structural failure of these features could, however, adversely affect the function and operability of safety-related equipment.

Safety Implications In the event the conditions had remained undetected, the operability of equipment essential to safe plant operation could not be assured during or after a seismic event.

Corrective Action An engineering program has been procedurally established involving field verification and damage study evaluation. The results of this program will include an assessment of each architectural feature including an approved modification to provide adequate seismic restraint or an accep-table interaction.

Engineering activities for Unit 1 and 2 are currently scheduled for com-pletion in October, 1985. Construction activities will be completed prior to fuel load. Unit 2 activities will be accomplished in accordance with the project construction schedule.
