. : 'TXX-4101 January 30, 1984 ATTACHMENT DEFECTIVE PISTON SKIRT CASTINGS Description The supplier (Delaval) has advised us that the piston skirt castings for the lhit 2 diesel generators are defective. As a result of additional residual stress imposed from the heat treatment methods

' employed froni December 1978 to October 1981, the castings could crack under normal operating conditions.

Safety Analysis In the event the defect had not been corrected, the engines could fail in operation and render the diesel generators inoperable.

Corrective Actions Thc; piston skirt castings will be replaced with castings provided by the supplier. The replacements should be received no later than May, 1984. The installation will be completed prior to preoperational testing.of the engines.
