Title 10 CFR 20.1003 defines radiation are … Title 10 CFR 20.1003 defines radiation area as an area, accessible to individuals, in which radiation levels could result in an individual receiving a dose equivalent in excess of 5 mrem in 1 hour at 30 centimeters from the radiation source or from any surface that the radiation penetrates. Title 10 CFR 20.1902 requires each radiation area be posted with a conspicuous sign or signs bearing the radiation symbol and the words caution, radiation area. On October 19, 2009, the licensee identified a radiation area in the Kootenai Building with a dose rate of 20 mrem/hr at 30 centimeters that was not posted. The dose rate existed because a radioactive source used to verify the response of ventilation equipment became separated from its source tool. The source was uncontrolled for approximately 65 minutes. No unintended personnel dose occurred. The violation was of very low safety significance because it was not: (1) an ALARA finding, (2) an overexposure, (3) a substantial potential for overexposure, or (4) an inability to assess dose.
