Items of Interest Week Ending DECEMBER 6, 2019 Staff Issues Schedule Change Letter for the Surry Subsequent License Renewal Application On November 27, 2019, the staff issued a schedule change letter for the Surry subsequent license renewal application (SLRA). The schedule change was limited to revising the issuance of the staff's safety evaluation report from November 2019 to December 2019 to support closure of the final review aspects. The overall 18-month review schedule for the Surry SLRA remains unchanged, including the ACRS meeting dates (Subcommittee in February 2020 and Full Committee in April 2020) and final decision on the renewed license (June 2020). This schedule change was coordinated with the applicant, Dominion, in advance.
Staff Issues Oconee Nuclear Station, Units 1, 2, and 3, Seismic Probabilistic Risk Assessment On November 29, 2019, the staff issued its assessment of the Oconee Nuclear Station, Units 1, 2, and 3, seismic probabilistic risk assessment (SPRA) (ADAMS Accession No. ML19267A022).
As part of the SPRA submittal, Duke self-identified cost-effective modifications at each Oconee unit that would substantially limit the seismic large early release frequency value. The staff concluded that Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC had responded appropriately to the Fukushima-related 10 CFR 50.54(f) letter, Recommendation 2.1 Seismic for Oconee. The staff also concluded that no further actions were necessary regarding the 50.54(f) letter for seismic considerations at Oconee, assuming the committed modifications are completed as planned.
