Items of Interest Week Ending December 14, 2018 Issuance of RIS on Reactor Pressure Vessel On December 11, 2018, the staff issued RIS (Regulatory Issues Summary) 2018-06, "Clarification of the Requirements for Reactor Pressure Vessel Upper Head Bare Metal Visual Examinations." This RIS clarifies the requirements for reactor vessel head bare-metal visual examinations, which can be either a visual examination of the bare metal of the upper head or a visual testing (VT)-2 examination under the insulation to meet the requirements of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code Case N-729-4, "Alternative Examination Requirements for PWR Reactor Vessel Upper Heads with Nozzles Having Pressure-Retaining Partial-Penetration WeldsSection XI , Division 1." This RIS requires no action nor written response on the part of an addressee.

Items of Interest Week Ending December 14, 2018 List of Approved Spent Fuel Storage Casks: Holtec International HI-STORM 100 Multipurpose Canister Cask System, Certificate of Compliance No. 1014, Amendment Nos. 11 and 12: Direct Final Rule: Part 72 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (Regulation Identifier Number 3150-AK18: NRC-2018-0221)
On December 12, 2018, the NRC published a direct final rule in the Federal Register (83 FR 63794) amending its spent fuel storage regulations by revising the Holtec International HI-STORM 100 Multipurpose Canister Cask System listing within the "List of approved spent fuel storage casks" to include Amendment Nos. 11 and 12 to Certificate of Compliance No. 1014. Amendment Nos. 11 and 12 revise multiple items in the Technical Specifications for multi-purpose canister models listed under Certificate of Compliance No. 1014; most of these revisions involve changes to the authorized contents. In addition, Amendment No. 11 makes several other editorial changes. The companion proposed rule was also published in the Federal Register on December 12, 2018, (83 FR 3814). The direct final rule will become effective on February 25, 2019, unless significant adverse comments are received by January 11, 2019.
