JUNE 15, 2018 ENCLOSURE C

Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR)

Items of Interest Week Ending June 15, 2018 Accident Tolerant Fuel Public Meeting On June 12, 2018, the staff held a public meeting on accident tolerant fuel (ATF) phenomenon identification and ranking table (PIRTs) exercises. The staff presented on the role of PIRTs in supporting ATF licensing. The Nuclear Energy Institute and Electric Power Research Institute also made a presentation on behalf of industry's ATF working group. The staff then led a structured discussion to aid in finalization of the staff's strategy for ATF PIRTs. The discussion revealed that there are opportunities to conduct coordinated, industry-wide PIRTs in certain areas, but that for chromium-coated cladding and iron-chrome-aluminum concepts it will be more productive for the staff to engage directly with the vendors to ensure NRC needs related to PIRTs are met. The staff's strategy for ATF PIRTs will be included in the ATF Project Plan.
