Purpose:
To inform the Agreement States that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has provided the Commission with its review of the emerging medical technologies program in SECY-18-0037, Review of the Emerging Medical Technologies Program.
Background:
Due to the growth in medical applications of radioisotopes and advancements in medical technologies for use in diagnosis, therapy, and medical research, it is anticipated that an increase in the number of emerging medical technologies licensed by the NRC will occur.
Discussion: The paper summarizes the process that the NRC staff takes to evaluate whether an emerging medical technology is covered by the regulations in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 35 Subparts D through H. It also summarizes the process that the NRC staff takes to develop licensing guidance for the emerging medical technology. SECY-18-0037 includes a list of past, in process, and anticipated NRC staff reviews of emerging medical technologies.
