December 13, 2000 Mr. Ralph Beedle, Senior Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer, Nuclear Generation Nuclear Energy Institute 1776 I Street, Suite 400 Washington, D.C. 20006-3708
SUBJECT:
INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE ON SECY-00-0194, RISK-INFORMING SPECIAL TREATMENT REQUIREMENTS
Dear Mr. Beedle:
Your letter of November 8, 2000, to Chairman Meserve on the above subject has been referred to me for response. In your letter, you noted three key issues related to the topics discussed in the SECY papertreatment of systems, structures and components following categorization, selective implementation on a system basis and inclusion of a risk-informed option for Part 54 (license renewal).
As noted in the SECY, the staff views expressed on particular topics were preliminary in order to facilitate continued interaction with our stakeholders on this rulemaking. We are planning a workshop in the February 2001 time frame for this purpose. We welcome the opportunity during this workshop to discuss with you and other stakeholders the range of topics raised in your letter.
Sincerely,
/RA/ Signed by S. Collins Samuel J. Collins, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Project No. 689
