No: IV-13-028 September 9, 2013 CONTACT: Victor Dricks, 817-200-1128 Lara Uselding, 817-200-1519 NRC Schedules Predecisional Enforcement Conference with Southwest X-Ray The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a predecisional enforcement conference with representatives of Southwest X-ray Corp. on Sep. 12 to discuss apparent violations of NRC requirements related to improper radiography procedures observed at a facility in Casper, Wyo.

The conference will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the NRCs Region IV office located at 1600 E. Lamar Blvd., Arlington, Texas. The meeting is open to the public and NRC officials will be available after the meeting to answer questions. Interested parties may listen to the conference via phone by dialing 1-800-952-9677 and asking to be connected to the meeting.

The company holds an NRC license authorizing it to perform radiography on welds, piping and other equipment. During an inspection of the facility on July 8, an NRC inspector observed a radiography assistant performing radiography by himself without the appropriate supervision by a qualified radiographer.

The purpose of the conference is for the company to discuss the apparent violations and provide any corrective actions taken to ensure radiography procedures are followed as required.

No decision on the apparent violations or enforcement action, such as a civil penalty, will be made at the conference. Those decisions will be made by NRC officials at a later time.

An NRC inspection report with more information on this issue is available through the NRC website. The number to access the document is ML13233A167.
