NRC OFFICIAL TO HOLD NEWS CONFERENCE IN RALEIGH ON SEPTEMBER 20 The top Nuclear Regulatory Commission official in the southeast will hold a special news conference in Raleigh on Friday, September 20, to discuss the agency's regulatory responsibilities at commercial nuclear facilities in North Carolina and the United States.
Stewart D. Ebneter, Administrator of the NRC's Region II office in Atlanta, will brief reporters at 11:00 a.m. (EDT) in Governor's Room One at the Radisson Hotel, 421 S. Salisbury Street, on current regulatory issues at the Harris nuclear power plant near Raleigh, the Brunswick plant near Southport and the McGuire plant near Charlotte.
He will also address Hurricane Fran effects and responses at both the Brunswick and Harris plants, as well as overall NRC preparations for emergency response in the event of hurricanes, accidents or other events.
Ebneter will discuss the status of the North Carolina State University research reactor in Raleigh, transportation and storage of spent fuel, NRC's regulatory agreement with the State of North Carolina and the status of and NRC responsibilities relating to low-level radioactive waste in North Carolina and the southeast.
NRC regional officials hold these news conferences on a
quarterly basis to discuss events at regulated facilities and answer reporters' questions on these subjects.
