U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Public Affairs, Region II 101 Marietta Street, Suite 2900 Atlanta, Georgia 30323 No. II-96-37 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ken Clark 404-331-5503 (Tuesday, April 2, 1996)

Roger Hannah 404-331-7878 NRC DISPATCHES INSPECTORS TO TENNESSEE NUCLEAR FUEL PLANT Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials have dispatched inspectors to the Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc., (NFS) fuel plant at

Erwin, Tennessee, following receipt of a

report of a

fire in ductwork atop one of the plant's buildings which processes radioactive material.

NRC officials said one manager and two radiation specialists from its regional office in Atlanta and the agency's NFS project manager in Washington, D.C. are expected to arrive at the site early this evening.

Plant officials notified the NRC that a Site Area Emergency was declared at 12:26 p.m. (edt) as a result of a fire in an incinerator duct on the roof of the incinerator building where uranium-contaminated waste is handled.

Local fire and police personnel joined the plant fire brigade in extinguishing the fire.

Preliminary information indicated that there were no personnel injuries at the plant as a result of the fire.

The State of Tennessee and NFS are conducting air monitoring on and off the site.

Preliminary information indicates no radiological danger to persons living near the plant.
