No: II-16-024 April 18, 2016 CONTACT: Roger Hannah 404-997-4417 Joey Ledford 404-997-4416 NRC Schedules Webinar to Discuss Safety Performance of AREVA Richland The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a webinar with management of AREVA NP Inc., in Richland, Wash., on Tuesday, April 26, to discuss the results of a regulatory safety performance review of the companys commercial nuclear fuel fabrication plant.

The webinar will be held from 2-3 p.m. EDT (11 a.m.-noon PDT) with NRC officials participating from the agencys regional offices in Atlanta and AREVA officials at the facility in Richland. The webinar can be accessed by the public and the media, and NRC officials will be available after the formal presentation to answer questions.

The NRC staff assessed performance of AREVA Richland during the period beginning Jan. 1, 2014 and ending Dec. 31, 2015, in safety operations, radiological controls, facility support and other areas. The NRC staff review determined that AREVA continued to conduct its activities safely and securely, protecting public health and the environment.

The review found that none of the program areas needed improvement, which means the NRC will continue its normal inspection program for such facilities.

The NRC inspects AREVA and other nuclear fuel facilities on a continuous basis to monitor their safety performance, said NRC Region II Administrator Cathy Haney. We post our inspection reports online and we also hold regular meetings, or in this case a webinar, to discuss our oversight and answer questions from members of the public.

A copy of the NRC letter to the company regarding the performance review is publicly available on the NRC website.

For information on how to access the webinar, please contact the NRCs Tom Vukovinsky at 404-997-4622 or via email at Thomas.Vukovinsky@nrc.gov.
