NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 245 Peachtree Center Ave. NE, Suite 1200 Atlanta, GA 30303-1257 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-11-068 December 5, 2011 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 997-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 997-4416 NRC STAFF SCHEDULES MEETING WITH SHAW AREVA MOX SERVICES TO DISCUSS PERFORMANCE AT MIXED OXIDE FACILITY The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a meeting with officials of Shaw Areva MOX Services at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15 in Aiken, S.C., to discuss the results of the Applicant Performance Review for the Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility currently under construction at the Savannah River site.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held at Newberry Hall, 117 Newberry St., SW, in Aiken. NRC officials will be available to answer questions from the public after the business portion of the meeting.

The NRC review covered the period from Oct. 1, 2010 to Sept. 30, 2011, and found MOX facility construction activities acceptable. The review also determined that the construction program was being sufficiently implemented. The NRC did not identify any areas needing improvement during the most recent assessment period.

The MOX facility, which is owned by the Department of Energys National Nuclear Security Administration, is part of an effort to make surplus weapons-grade plutonium into more proliferation-resistant forms. Converting the plutonium into MOX fuel will enable it to be used in commercial reactors to generate electricity. In the United States, only those reactors authorized by the NRC will be permitted to use MOX fuel.

The performance review letter for the MOX facility is available on the NRC website at www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html . The number to access that document is ML11319A354.
