No. II-10-047 June 14, 2010 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 997-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 997-4416 NRC SCHEDULES MEETING TO DISCUSS RESTART OF NFS LINE U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials have scheduled a public meeting Thursday, June 24 to discuss the findings of the NRC Restart Readiness Assessment Team that led to the decision to authorize restart of the Uranium Metal/Uranium Oxide process line at the Nuclear Fuel Services Erwin, Tenn. facility in May.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in the Erwin Town Hall at 211 North Main Ave. in Erwin. Members of the public can observe the business part of the meeting and the NRC staff will host a formal question and answer session when that portion has ended.

Although we have already authorized restart of this particular line, we felt it was important to present the results of our assessment in a public meeting and answer any questions people may have about the restart decision, said NRC Region II Division of Fuel Facility Inspection Director Joe Shea.

The NRC authorized the restart of the Navy Fuel process line in late March and the Uranium Metal/Uranium Oxide line in May after the agency was satisfied that the performance deficiencies identified last year were sufficiently addressed by NFS. All NFS process lines were shut down in late December 2009 and the NRC issued a confirmatory action letter in January designed to address issues that contributed to some earlier events at the facility.
