NRC NEWS UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS, REGION II 61 Forsyth Street SW, Atlanta GA 30303 Web Site: www.nrc.gov/OPA No. II-00-33 June 5, 2000 CONTACT:

Ken Clark (404)562-4416/e-mail: kmc2@nrc.gov Roger D. Hannah (404)562-4417/e-mail: rdh1@nrc.gov NRC TO SOLICIT COMMENTS ON NUCLEAR PLANT DECOMMISSIONING DOCUMENT The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff, at a public meeting in Atlanta next Tuesday, June 13, will solicit comments on its intention to prepare a "Draft Supplement to the Generic Environmental Impact Statement on Decommissioning of Nuclear Facilities."

The meeting is scheduled for 7 to 10 p.m. at the Doubletree Guest Suites, Atlanta-Perimeter, 6120 Peachtree Dunwoody Road in Atlanta.

The session is one of four being held around the country regarding the Draft Supplement.

Although a 1988 NRC document, NUREG-0586, "Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS) on Decommissioning Nuclear Facilities," covered all NRC-licensed facilities, the supplement would address only the decommissioning of nuclear power reactors.

The NRC staff plans to issue the Draft Supplement for public comment next year.

The meeting will include a presentation by the NRC staff on the reasons a supplement to the GEIS is being prepared and the environmental issues related to the decommissioning of nuclear plants it will address.

Interested persons are invited to make comments at the meeting or to submit written comments by July 15 to the Chief, Rules and Directives Branch, Division of Administrative Services, Mail Stop T-6-D-59, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, D.C. 20555-001, or electronically to the NRC at DGEIS@NRC.GOV.
