VISIT BY INDIAN NUCLEAR REGULATORS TO DISCUSS SAFETY ISSUES Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of India, heads a delegation that has been discussing civilian nuclear power safety issues with the U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission over the last two weeks.

The delegation is making a reciprocal visit following meetings in India in July with an American delegation led by Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary and NRC Commissioner E. Gail de Planque. It was decided during that trip to open a safety dialogue between regulators of the two countries.

At NRC headquarters in Rockville, Md., Dr. Gopalakrishnan and his team engaged in extensive discussions with the NRC Commissioners and senior staff on such issues as fire safety, core shroud cracking, technical training and public information.

The delegation also visited the NRC's Public Document Room in Washington, D.C., the NRC Technical Training Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Carolina Power & Light Co.'s Brunswick nuclear power plant in Southport, N.C.

At a working luncheon today, Dr. Gopalakrishnan is to work out with Secretary O'Leary and NRC Chairman Ivan Selin the next phase in the technical dialogue, including planned trips to India early next year by Dr. Selin and Secretary O'Leary.
