NRC STAFF PLANS MEETING WITH AGREEMENT STATES ON AGENCY RULEMAKING PROCEEDINGS The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, May 20, 1992, in Orlando, Florida, with representatives of all 50 States.
Members of the public may also participate in the meeting, which is being held to obtain input on five agency rulemaking proceedings and to update the status of three other rules.
The session will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Clarion Plaza Hotel, 9700 International Drive, Orlando.
The meeting is one of the steps being taken by the NRC staff to carry out a Commission directive to obtain early and substantial involvement of the States in rulemaking proceedings and other NRC regulatory efforts that affect NRC and/or State licensees.
The staff particularly is interested in consulting with the States on the need to make their regulatory requirements compatible with those proposed by the NRC in individual rulemakings.
The May 20 meeting will focus on: (1) rulemaking to provide notification of incidents at Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installations, (2) rulemaking on financial assurance at low-level radioactive waste sites, (3) a petition on the regulation of independent power producers, (4) rulemaking to provide reporting requirements for defects and non-compliance for materials facilities, and (5) guidelines for the preparation of regulatory analyses.
The NRC staff will also present a status report on the following items: (1) radiation safety for pregnant and nursing patients, (2) a petition from the Society of Nuclear Medicine covering the use of radiopharmaceuticals, and (3) a petition from Free Environment, Inc. regarding siting criteria for nuclear power plants.
Questions about the meeting may be addressed to Vandy Miller, Office of State Programs, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, D.C. 20555; Telephone: 301/504-2650.
