NRC STAFF PLANS CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED LIGHT WATER REACTORS Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Ivan Selin will welcome participants to a two-day conference planned by the NRC staff next month to discuss with the nuclear industry and the public issues related to the design certification and licensing processes for advanced light water reactors.
The conference will be held in Washington, D.C.,
at the Mayflower Hotel on November 4 and 5, beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day and advance registration without fee is required.
Persons interested in attending can register by contacting Ms. Kevin Bohrer, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, D.C. 20555; telephone 301/492-1293.
The objectives of the conference are to (1) inform the industry and the public of NRC's process for performing design certification reviews, (2) address the technical safety issues concerning advanced reactors, and (3) provide a forum for discussing NRC's overall approach to design certification.
In addition, the current status of the staff's review of several advanced reactor designs will be discussed--including General Electric Company's Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) and Small Boiling Water Reactor, Westinghouse Electric Company's AP-600 and Combustion Engineering Company's System 80+.
