No: 21-013 March 28, 2022 CONTACT: David McIntyre, 301-415-8200 NRC Proposes FY 2023 Budget to Congress The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is proposing to Congress a budget of $929.2 million for fiscal year 2023, an increase of $41.5 million over its enacted budget for FY 2022.
Since the NRC expects to recover $792.2 million of its budget in license fees, which are paid directly to the U.S. Treasury, the resulting net appropriations request is $137 million, an increase of $6 million over the agencys FY 2022 enacted budget.
Details of the budget request include:
- Funding of $490.7 million for nuclear reactor safety, including $402.1 million for operating reactors and $88.6 million for new reactors.
- Funding of $135.5 million for nuclear materials and waste safety.
- Funding of $23.8 million for the continued development of a regulatory infrastructure for advanced nuclear reactor technologies.
- Funding of $17.8 million for the Office of Inspector General, including funding to provide inspector general services for the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.
- Support for 2,880 full-time equivalent employees, including the OIG, which is basically unchanged from the FY 2022 enacted budget.
