No: 22-007 February 18, 2022 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Seeks Public Input on Environmental Review Topics for Kairos Test Reactor Construction Permit Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will seek public views on environmental issues the agency should consider in reviewing Kairos Powers application for a construction permit to build the Hermes test reactor at a site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
NRC staff will consider written comments regarding environmental topics until April 19, following the publication of a notice in the Federal Register. Comments should include Docket ID NRC-2021-0193, sent via email to KairosHermes-CPEIS@nrc.gov or via mail to Office of Administration, Mail Stop TWFN 7 A60M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001.
The staff will hold a meeting on Wednesday, March 23, to discuss the safety and environmental review processes and take comments. Meeting details will be available by March 11 on the NRCs public meeting calendar or the agency webpage on the Kairos application.
Kairos submitted the applications environmental report on Oct. 31, 2021. The company plans to build a 35-megawatt, non-power reactor, which uses molten salt to cool the reactor core.
The test reactor would provide operational data to support the development of a larger version meant for a commercial nuclear power plant. The company will have to submit a separate application for an operating license in the future. A copy of the environmental report is available for public inspection at the Oak Ridge Public Library, 1401 Oak Ridge Turnpike in Oak Ridge.
