No: 21-039 September 29, 2021 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Accepts Application For Subsequent License Renewal of St. Lucie Reactors The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted for review an application from Florida Power and Light requesting an additional 20 years for the already-renewed operating licenses of St.

Lucie Plant Units 1 and 2. FPL submitted its subsequent license renewal application Aug. 3.

The application, with proprietary details removed, is available on the NRC website. FPL is seeking a subsequent renewal for the St. Lucie units in Jensen, Florida, approximately 10 miles southeast of Fort Pierce. The NRC approved the initial license renewal in Oct. 2003, with Unit 1 currently licensed to operate through March 1, 2036, and Unit 2 through April 6, 2043.

Accepting the application for review, or docketing the application, does not indicate whether the Commission will approve or reject the request. More information about subsequent license renewal is available on the NRC website.

The NRC has published in the Federal Register a notice of opportunity to intervene in an adjudicatory hearing. Petitions to intervene in a hearing must be filed by Nov. 29, by anyone whose interest may be affected by the proposed license renewal and who wishes to participate as a party in the proceeding. More information on the hearing process is available on the NRC website.
