NRC APPROVES INCREASED POWER OUTPUT FOR LIMERICK NUCLEAR POWER PLANT The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved a request by Exelon Generation Company to increase the power generating capacity of Limerick Generating Station, Units 1 and 2, by 1.65 percent each.

The NRC staffs careful evaluation determined that Exelon could safely increase the reactors power output primarily through more accurate means of measuring feedwater flow. As part of its evaluation, NRC staff reviewed the companys analysis showing the plants design can accommodate the increased power level.

The NRCs safety evaluation of the plants proposed power uprate focused on several areas, including the nuclear steam supply systems, instrumentation and control systems, electrical systems, accident evaluations, radiological consequences, fire protection, operations and training, testing, and technical specification changes.

The power uprate for Limericks boiling-water reactors, located approximately 21 miles northwest of Philadelphia, will increase each units power generating capacity from approximately 1,189 to 1,205 megawatts electric. Exelon intends to implement Unit 1s uprate within 90 days, and Unit 2s uprate within 90 days of the completion of its 2011 spring refueling outage.

The NRC previously published a notice about the power uprate application in the Federal Register (http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2010/pdf/2010-13617.pdf, page 32512). The agencys evaluation of the Limerick power uprate will be available through the NRCs ADAMS electronic document database by entering ML110691095 under the Simple Search tab on this Web page:
