NRC SEEKS ADDITIONAL PUBLIC INPUT ON GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION ISSUE The Nuclear Regulatory Commission seeks additional public input on ways to improve the agencys approach to the groundwater contamination issue. This is an additional opportunity for public input beyond that of the agencys April 20 workshop.

Recent tritium contamination of groundwater wells and soil from buried piping leaks at several nuclear power plants has raised questions regarding the completeness of NRC actions to date and whether those actions need to be augmented. A task force was formed in response to these incidents.

On April 20, the NRC staff held a public workshop where a variety of government, industry, academic and public experts had the opportunity to provide their input on this matter.

The meeting is available for viewing through the NRC webcast archives at http://video.nrc.gov/.

The task force will provide its observations, findings and recommendations in a written report that will be reviewed by staff. Public feedback and comments will be considered for the report that is expected to be available to the public in June. Comments can be sent to chuck.casto@nrc.gov by May 13.

A copy of the memorandum establishing the task force can be found on the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/fact-sheets/buried-pipes-tritium.html.
