GSA SIGNS LEASE FOR THIRD NRC HEADQUARTERS BUILDING The General Services Administration, acting on behalf of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, has signed a lease with developer LCOR to build a 14-story office building adjacent to the NRCs two Rockville, Md., headquarters offices. This will permit the reconsolidation of staff displaced by agency growth.
This is a tremendous accomplishment, said NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko. A lot of people worked long and hard on this project, and it is great to see it come to fruition.
Now we can bring back to the main complex functions that we had to move out as the agency expanded to deal with new reactor applications. One of the core lessons of the Three Mile Island event is that the NRC functions best when its constituent parts are co-located, and that will be accomplished in just a few years, he added.
The approximately 360,000 square feet of space - which the developer believes can be ready by July 2012 - will house approximately 1,300 NRC personnel. Groundbreaking is expected in Spring of 2010.
The property is across Marinelli Street from the two existing NRC buildings, on the east side of Rockville Pike, next to the White Flint Metro station. It will be part of the North Bethesda Center, a mixed-use development that LCOR is building in phases on a 32-acre site. LCOR is a real estate investment and development company working in the eastern United States and the West Coast.
The building, designed by architect HOK, will meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council.
