NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.08-125 July 3, 2008 NRC MEETING JULY 17 IN WAYNESBORO, GA., TO DISCUSS REVIEW PROCESS FOR VOGTLE NEW REACTOR APPLICATION Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will conduct a public meeting in Waynesboro, Ga.,
on Thursday, July 17, to discuss the agencys review process for Southern Nuclear Operating Co.s application for a Combined License (COL) application to build and operate two AP1000 reactors at the Vogtle site near Waynesboro.
Weve been reviewing a separate request regarding the site's suitability for some time now, but we want the nearby communities to understand what the COL proposes and how well review it, said David Matthews, Director of the Division of New Reactor Licensing in the NRCs Office of New Reactors.
Southern Nuclear submitted the application and associated information March 31, seeking approval to build and operate two AP1000 reactors at the site, approximately 26 miles southeast of Augusta, Ga. The application, without proprietary or security-related details, is available on the NRC Web site here: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-licensing/col.html.
The NRC will hold the meeting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Waynesboro Auditorium of the Augusta Technical College, Waynesboro/Burke Campus, 216 Highway 24 South. NRC staff presentations will describe the overall Combined License review process, which includes safety and environmental assessments, as well as how the public can participate in the process. The NRC will host an open house for an hour prior to the meeting so members of the public have the opportunity to talk informally with agency staff.
A COL, if the NRC issues it, provides authorization to construct and, with conditions, operate a nuclear power plant at a specific site and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. More information on the NRCs new reactor licensing process is available on the agencys Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactor-licensing.html.
The AP1000 is a Westinghouse-designed 1,100 MWe pressurized-water reactor the NRC certified in 2006. Westinghouse submitted an application in May 2007 to amend the certified design. The amendment application (minus proprietary or security-related details), will be
available on the NRC Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-licensing/design-cert/amended-ap1000.html.
