NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Web Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.07-045 April 10, 2007 NRC STAFF APPROVES BIG ROCK POINT ISFSI LICENSE TRANSFER The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has approved the transfer of the operating license for the Big Rock Point Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) from Consumers Energy to Entergy Nuclear Palisades and site operator Entergy Nuclear Operations. As provided by NRC regulations, the staff's approval of the license transfer became effective on April 6.

On Oct. 31, 2006, the companies submitted an application to the NRC requesting approval of the license transfer. Major issues considered by the NRC included financial qualifications as well as transfer and maintenance of accumulated decommissioning funds. Several groups petitioned the NRC for leave to intervene in this proceeding, and the Commission is considering the petition.

A copy of the NRC's approval order and accompanying safety evaluation report will be placed in the NRC's Public Document Room, One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Room O-1 F23, Rockville, MD 20852 (telephone 1-800-397-4209 or 301-415-4737). The safety evaluation will also be available on the NRCs Agency-wide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS), by entering ML070920385 at this address: http://adamswebsearch.nrc.gov/dologin.htm. Help in using ADAMS is available by calling the Public Document Room.
