Sharma, Vice Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of India, and a six-person Indian government delegation September 8-17, to exchange nuclear power plant safety information. Discussions with the Director of the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research and other key NRC officials concerned five project areas in civilian nuclear power, which have been approved by the respective governments. These discussions addressed key topics in operating license renewal, design basis modifications, emergency operating procedures, fire safety, and risk-informed regulation.
In addition to the technical discussions, which were based on publicly available information, the Indian delegation visited the University of Maryland, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Surry Nuclear Power Plant in Gravel Neck, Virginia. It is anticipated that follow-on meetings will be held in 2004 in Mumbai, India and Washington, D.C.
