NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, DC 20555-001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Web Site: http://www.nrc.gov/OPA No.00-047 March 17, 2000 RELOCATION OF NRC TECHNICAL TRAINING CENTER DEFERRED The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is deferring its recent decision to relocate its Technical Training Center from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to a location in close proximity to the NRC headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, pending completion of a General Accounting Office (GAO) study on the merits of the move.

The Commission had decided to relocate the facility in order to improve the agencys training program. The move would enable experts at headquarters to work more closely with trainers to ensure that the NRC training program meets the demands of the NRCs new regulatory reform efforts.

However, in light of Congressional concerns, the Commission has decided to delay implementation until the GAO has had an opportunity to conduct an independent study. The Commission has directed the NRC staff to take no further action to implement the relocation of the Chattanooga facility until the GAO has issued its report and the Commission has had an opportunity to review any GAO recommendations.

Under the plan approved by the Commission on February 24, the Technical Training Center would have remained in Chattanooga until at least March 2003, although a portion of the Centers 26 staff members would have been relocated in Maryland by September 2001.
