SUBJECT:

EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

At 1:07 P.M., PXT, on April 7, 1989, a magnitude 4.6 (Richter Open Scale) earthquake occurred near Newport Beach, California. -The earthquake was felt from Escondido (east of San Diego) to Hollywood, California.

Seismic detectors were actuated. The licensee reported that there was no damage to the facility.

San Onofre, located 27 miles from the epicenter, reported that seismic instruments.

were activated for Unit 1; the earthquake was physically felt at Units 2 and 3, but recording instruments did not activate (having a higher activation threshold than Unit 1).

Vibrations were sensed by the Units 2/3 turbine vibration monitors and loose parts monitoring systems, but o damage was reported.

The licensee declared an Unusual Event at 1:23.p.m. P T (based on activation of the Unit 1 seismic instruments),

notified state and local authorities, and initiated inspections of plant areas.
