SUBJECT:
EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA At 10:53 P.M., PST, on January 18, 1989, a magnitude 5.0 RO occurred 8 miles south of Malibu, CA. Telephone contact was made with the identified licensees between 7:00 and 8:30 A.M., PST, on January 19, 1989. The earthquake was felt at Atomics International, 23 miles from the epicenter. Based on a preliminary report there was no damage and no release of radioactive material.
The reactor facility at the University of California, 47 miles from the epicenter, was occupied at the time, but the earthquake was not felt. It was felt in the vicinity however. The reactor staff was performing maintenance. The reactor was shut down at 10:20 P.M. PST and restarted at 11:05 P.M., PST. The seismic instruments did not register, no damage was identified, and no releases of radioactive material occurred.
The earthquake was not felt by the staff at San Onofre, San Clemente, CA., 70 miles from the epicenter.
