BANNING OF MARE ISLAND NAVAL SHIPYARD (NUCLEAR PROPULSION UNIT),
VALLEJ0, CALIFORNIA FOR RADI0 ACTIVE WASTE SaIPMENT The Region V office was notified by a copy of a letter dated March 23, 1981 from the State of Nevada to the Mare Is?and Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, California, that the Mare Island Naval Shipyard had been banned from use of the burial site at Beatty, Nevada. Based upon a shipment of radioactive waste in a plywood box, which contained cracks in the seams and apparently in noncompliance with DOT regulations, the State of Nevada suspended the burial permit until further notice. Even though the Nuclear Propulsion Unit is not an NRC licensee, the banning action will affect those NRC licensees located at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Action is being taken by the Mare Island Naval Shipyard to have the burial permit reinstated.
There has been no media interest.
