MOISTURE DENSITY GAUGE STOLEN FROM RESIDENCE (State of Arizona Licensee)

On November 14,1998, a Maxim Technologies representative contacted the NRC Operations Center to report the theft of a portable gauge from a vehicle parked at a residence in Chandler, Arizona. The gauge was a Model 3411B Troxler moisture / density gauge which was temporarily stored in the bed of a truck at a licensee employee's residence. The gauge was stolen between 2 a.m. and 10 a.m. local time on November 14.

The gauge contains an 8 millicurie cesium-137 sealed source and a 40 millicurie americium-241/ beryllium sealed source. The Phoenix police department was notified of the theft upon discovery by an employee of the licensee. The police are continuing their

investigation of the theft.

I On November 16,1998, the State of Arizona reported that the gauge case had been found, but the gauge was still missing.

Region IV has informed OSP and NMSS. The State of Arizona indicated that state i

representatives in Utah, California, New Mexico, and Colorado have been notified of the theft. Also, the State of Arizona indicated that Mexico was being notified. There has been media coverage of this event. The local law enforcement authorities issued a press release, and the event has been discussed in local televised news reports.

This information has been discussed with the State of Arizona and is current as of 12:00 p.m. (CST) November 16,1998.
