STOLEN MOISTURE DENSITY GAUGE On June 8,1998, a representative of the state of Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) notified NRC Region IV of the theft of a portable moisture / density gauge in Topeka, Kansas.
Between June 5-6,1998, a Humboldt Model H5-001P (serial number 1026) moisture / density gauge containing 40 millicuries of ame-icium-241 and 8 millicuries of cesium-137 was stolen from a state of Kansas licensee. The gauge was taken from the bed of a pickup t?Jck parked in front of an authorized gauge user's house in Topeka. It was reported by the licensee that the gauge had been placed in the truck and properly secured to the vehicle with a chain and lock. Prior to work on the morning of June 6, when the gauge user arrived at his truck, he noticed that the gauge and its transportation container was missing from tne bed of the vehicle. The chain securing the transportation container had been cut. The gauge user then filed a police report and notified the KDHE. The licensee plans to issue a press release on June 9,1998, requesting assistance locating the stolen gauge.
The state of Kansas has been infonned.
Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the state of Kansas on June 8. Region IV has informed NMSS.
This information has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of 10:00 (CDT), June 9,1998.
