REPORT OF OCCUPATIONAL SKIN DOSE EXCEEDING NRC LIMITS At 6:00 PM on November 14,1997, during the preparation of an iodine-131 capsule by the licensee's radiopharmacist/ radiation safety officer, approximately 60 mci of iodine-131 sprayed from the vial. lodine-131 was found to have contaminated a glove box, the pharmacy floor and the right arm of the RSO. The licensee requested skin dose estimates for the event from two separate consultants. On June 5,1998, the licensee reported to the NRC that the estimates from the two consultants were 62.5 rem and 115 rad. The regulatory limit is 50 rem.

NRC Region IV had previously been informed of the contamination event, and had followed up on the event and exposure during a recent inspection. The results of the inspection are still under review.

The state of Idaho has been informed.
