LOSS OF Po-210 SOURCE On December 15,1997, at 4:30 p.m. (CST), the Hadiatlun Safety Officer (RSO) for Micron Technology, a generallicensee in Boise, Idaho, telephoned Region IV to report a inissing 81.4 rnegabecquerels (2.2 millicudes) Po 210 source contained in an ionizer device. During an internal audit, the licensee discovered that the source was missing. The RSO was notified on December 15,1997, at about 3:30 p.m. (CST). This source / device was leased to Micron Technology by NRD, Inc., of Grand Island, New York.

The device is described as a barrel ionizer, Model No. P2021, containing source Serial No.091387. Micton Technology hr.s condue'ed a search of its f acilities, but has been unab%

to recover the cource/ device. Micron Technr fogy was in the process of notifying NRD of the m!ssing source / device.

The state of Idaho and NMSS have been infonned.

This telephone notification was provided in accordance with 10 CFR 20.2011(ll(i), and the licensee plans to subsequently wbmit a written 30 day report. Region IV will review the licensee's written report for possible enforcement action.

Region IV receiven notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee's RSO at 4:30 tom. (CST) De comber 15.1997.

This information has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of 9:30 a.m. (CST)
