NRy facsimile transmittal dated October 29,1997, the California Radiologic Health Branch

fCRHB) Informed the Office of State Programs and Region IV of an incident involving an

' inadvertent exposur n

CRHB reported that an employee of Manson. Construction & Engineering Co., Long Beach, California, was removing a Texas Nuclear Model 5409 pipe gauge, containing 2.8 curies of ceslum-137, from a barge for. service when the exposure occurred. The individual believed 4

-that hehad closed the shutter prior to removing the gauge, but after working with the gauge M'

- E a period of time, he realized that the shutter had remained in the open position. The individual 4

.~ worked with the gauge for approximate!v 30 minutes and based on an evaluation performed

.by CRHB, the dose received.by the individual was estimated to be 4.7 rems. A second

Individual was also reported to have worked in the vicinity, although he was present for a sh' rter period of time and was at a greater distance from the source. A dose estimate for o

CRHB has directed Manson Construction & Engineering to obtain the services of a consultant R

fto complete a review of the incident and perform dose assessments for both indMuals. The

gauge manufacturer has been notified ~of the incident and will perform an examination of the 1 shutter mechanism to determine the cause of its failure to close.

The.' state of California provided NRC information regarding this ever.t.
