Subject:

FUME HOOD FAILURE The licensee's main radiolodine compounding fume hood was discovered to be inoperable at 10:30 a.m. EDT, August 29,1997. The fume hood serves to reduce occupational exposure to altborne radioactivity when preparing radiopharmaceuticals. The cause of the failure was a broken fan belt. The licensee cannot determine when the f ailure actually occurred, Licensee personnel recall that the hood was definitely in operation on August 22,1997, but are not certain of operation after August 22. Radiolodine pharmaceutical compounding was performed in the hood on August 25 through 28. The licensee's stack air sampler indicated a radiolodine concentration for the 1 week sampling period of 86 percent of the 10 CFR Part 20, Appendix B value for unrestricted areas. All hood filtration was in place and normal. Bloassay results on the licensee's radiopharmacists have not indicated any radiolodine internal uptake. The licensee replaced the broken fan belt and returned the fume hood to normal operation at 11:30 a.m. EDT, August 29,1997. .
