STOLEN PORTABLE GAUGE I 1

The Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency reported that a Troxter moisture / density gauge was removed from the bed of a licensee-owned truck between 4:00 pm on January 10 and 4:00 pm January 11,1997. The truck was parked in a lot in Phoenix at the time of the theft. The case within which the gauge was locked had been chained and padlocked to the bed of the truck. The device contains a 8-millicurie Cs-137 source and a 40-millicurie Am-241/Be source. The Phoenix Police Department is investigating the incident, and the Agency has sent an investigator to the licensee's location.

The Agency notified the states of Colorado, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and California. I l

l The NRC Region IV Office has notified the NRC Operations Center, NMSS, OCA, and OSP and will monitor the state's progress in investigating the event.
